Overview
Taught together with Paul Loh, Michael Mack and Tony Yu this subject brings together practical know-how and critical thinking around the field of digital visualizations using industry-standard software. Building on the digital representational and design skills acquired in Digital Design, students learn the principles of colour, material mapping, lighting, composition, entourage, storyboarding, rendering and animation techniques.
Students acquire new skills for building digital models, setting up ‘cameras’, adding ‘entourage’ (people, vegetation etc) with post-production across an ecology of software. The subject is delivered through a series of lectures, specialist software workshops (in collaboration with Binyan and Ensign Studio) and tutorials. The outcome is a portfolio of image rendering and animation positioned within a critical theoretical context of image production in contemporary design practice.
Similarly to digital design I had the pleasure on being part of this unit from its creation so working alongside Michael and Paul it was truly a very interesting experience of creating a unit about design visualisation unlike any other in Australia. With the support of the CEO from Binyan; Andrei Dolnikov and his staff as well as the support from Principal of Ensign Studio: Fooch Foo Chi Sung and his staff. This strong ongoing collaboration between our unit and these practices over the last three years has been part of the fantastic success of this unit and has been extremely rewarding for both the teaching stuff and numerous students who went off to work for them.
Roles
Tutor: As a tutor often teaching between 2 to 3 studios per semester I was responsible of delivering the content while providing guidance and feedback to the students in regards to the various assignments. This included small lectures, marking assignments, moderating presentations.
Senior Technical Tutor (Tech Lead): As Senior technical tutor I have been responsible for coordinating and delivering the workshops of the unit. These workshops have been delivered both in person (pre-pandemic), recorded (during pandemic) and in blended learning (post-pandemic). As senior tutor I was also responsible of providing tech support through both meetings and online consultations. The workshops were mainly focused on 3Ds Max + Vray but also went into Premiere/ After Effects/ Photoshop/ Audition.
